Biomasse Kraftwerk Güssing GmbH & Co KG - Austria
In 1998 the "Biomasse Kraftwerk Güssing GmbH & Co KG" was founded in order to make the generation of electricity from biomass possible also in small, decentralised power stations and a new type of power station was realised for the first time in Güssing. For this purpose a gasification procedure is used, which offers high advantages in comparison to combustion technologies. These are a high electrical efficiency and the generation of electricity and heat at the same time. In the biomass power station of Güssing 4500 kW district heat and 2000 kW electricity is produced from 2400 kg wood per hour.
The biomass CHP was commissioned in 2002 and till end of December 2006 more than 25.000 hours of operation were reached on the gas engine.
The three fundamental components of the biomass CHP are the steam gasification, the gas cooling and cleaning and the gas engine. Due to the used gasification system it is possible to feed back all residual substances into the process. As a consequence neither waste nor waste water result during gas cleaning. The electrical efficiency is about 25%, the overall efficiency (electricity and heat) is even more than 70%.
Due to the favourable characteristics of the product gas further scientific research, concerning the application of the generated gas as synthesis gas are carried out. National, international and EC-projects for the production of synthetic natural gas, hydrogen and Fischer Tropsch Diesel are going on at the moment.
The main work at the biomass CHP at the moment is to improve the economic efficiency of the power station. A biomass power station with high efficiency also for plants with higher capacity is the aim of further developments.
